When the Storm Is Bigger Than You
Life has a way of reminding us that we are not in control.
Most of us live as though we have things handled—our plans, finances, careers, families, and futures. Then a storm arrives. It may be a health crisis, a broken relationship, a financial setback, anxiety, grief, or uncertainty about what comes next. Suddenly, we realize how fragile our sense of control really is.
The disciples experienced that reality firsthand.
In Mark 4, Jesus and His disciples crossed the Sea of Galilee when a violent storm erupted. These were experienced fishermen. They knew the water. They knew storms. But this one was beyond their ability to manage. As the waves crashed into the boat, they became convinced they were going to die.
Meanwhile, Jesus was asleep.
In desperation they woke Him and asked, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”
Jesus stood, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Instantly the storm stopped. Not only did the wind cease, but the sea became calm.
Then Jesus asked them a surprising question:
“Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”
The issue wasn’t the storm itself. It was that they had forgotten who was in the boat with them.
Up to this point, the disciples had seen Jesus heal diseases and cast out demons. But commanding creation itself was different. In the Old Testament, only God had authority over the seas and storms. When Jesus spoke and nature obeyed, the disciples faced a staggering reality: God Himself was standing before them.
Their fear gave way to awe of the One who controlled the storm.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR US
The lesson is not that Jesus will immediately remove every storm from our lives.
It is that the One who has authority over every storm is with His people.
Too often, we treat Jesus as a last resort. We exhaust our own wisdom, strength, and solutions before turning to Him. The disciples did the same. Only when they thought they were sinking did they wake Him.
Yet Jesus’ invitation is simple: come to Him first.
When anxiety rises, bring it to Him.
When circumstances feel overwhelming, bring them to Him.
When the future is uncertain, bring it to Him.
The Christian life is not the absence of storms but the confidence that Christ is greater than them.
A PRACTICAL CHALLENGE
Think about the biggest storm in your life right now.
What are you trusting to get you through it? Your own strength? Your plans? Other people? Your ability to control the outcome?
Jesus invites us to place our confidence somewhere better.
The disciples learned that day that the safest place was not a calm sea but the presence of Christ.
The same is true today.
Storms will come. Fear will knock at the door. Circumstances may seem overwhelming.
But believers can remember a simple truth:
The One who commands the wind and the waves is still in the boat.
