Jesus Is Greater Than Every Power

One of the most breathtaking moments in the Gospel of Mark begins immediately after Jesus calms the raging storm on the Sea of Galilee. The disciples have just witnessed Him do what only God can do—command the wind and the waves, and creation obeys. They are left asking, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” (Mark 4:41).

The very next morning, they receive another answer.

As Jesus steps onto the shore in the region of the Gerasenes, He is met by a man possessed by a legion of demons. This wasn’t merely a troubled man; he was uncontrollable, isolated among the tombs, tormented day and night, and so powerful that no chains could restrain him. His entire community lived in fear.

Yet the moment he sees Jesus, everything changes.

The demons immediately recognize who Jesus is. Before anyone else speaks, they confess what many people still struggle to believe: “Jesus, Son of the Most High God.” They know they are standing before the One who possesses absolute authority over the spiritual realm.

Notice the striking reversal. The man had terrorized an entire region, but when Jesus arrives, it is the demons who are afraid.

Mark is making something unmistakably clear: there is no battle between equal forces. Jesus is not struggling against evil. He is not negotiating with darkness. He simply commands, and evil must obey.

For Christians today, this is deeply encouraging.

We often become overwhelmed by the darkness we see around us. We witness broken families, addiction, deception, spiritual confusion, and the increasing influence of evil in our culture. It can feel as though darkness is winning.

But Mark reminds us that Jesus has never surrendered His authority.

The same Savior who calmed the sea also rules over every spiritual power. Nothing surprises Him. Nothing intimidates Him. Nothing stands outside His sovereign authority.

This passage also reminds us why we should approach Jesus with both confidence and reverence. He is our Savior, Friend, and Shepherd—but He is also the Lord of heaven and earth. The disciples, the townspeople, and even the demons recognized that they were standing before Someone unlike anyone who had ever walked the earth.

Finally, this account points us toward God’s mission.

After delivering the man, Jesus sends him back to tell others what the Lord had done for him. One transformed life became a witness to an entire region. Long before the disciples would return with the gospel, this formerly demon-possessed man was preparing hearts by sharing the mercy and power of Christ.

The mission of the church has not changed.

Our calling is to proclaim the same Jesus—the One who has authority over sin, Satan, death, and every force of darkness. We do not carry a message of wishful thinking or self-improvement. We proclaim the victorious King who has already demonstrated His power and who will one day return to completely and finally defeat evil forever.

Whatever darkness you face today, remember this: Jesus is not threatened by it. He reigns over it. And because He reigns, His people can live with courage, worship with awe, and proclaim His gospel with confidence.
